Bicycle thefts in Norway
- Do Not Steal My Bike! is an association established by students
at
Tromsø University in 1994. Its primary goal is to
take action to ensure a reduction of the high rate of bicycle-
thefts in Norway.
- It has been estimated that about 100,000 bike-thefts are
committed in Norway annually. In 1997, 24,166 bike-thefts were reported
to the Police, and the insurance companies gave
compensation for 18,118 bikes.
- Do Not Steal My Bike! employs both preventive action and
public campaigning. We work towards distributing more solid
bike-rails, giving information on proper locking of bikes, and
encouraging bike-owners to have their bikes registered with
the Falken Bicycle Register. We conduct surveillance of
expensive bikes in high risk areas to catch bike thieves red
handed. Also, with the Police, we conduct controls where we
stopped all passing bikes and checked the frame-number against
the Police register of missing bikes and the Falken Bicycle
Register. In addition, we help the Police in identifying
confiscated and found bikes to have the thief pencilized and
bikes retrieved to their owners.

the death penalty for repeatedly stealing bikes.
